While attending the Colorado School Safety Resource Center meeting this week there was mention of three street drugs that have become popular with our youth.  We are sharing this in the interest of keeping parents and guardians informed and to help keep children safe.

1)  “Gravel” – Local law enforcement are in the early stages of their battle against a new potent street drug saying it’s highly addictive and leaves many users with extreme paranoia.  Gravel is synthetically made using bath salts mixed with various ingredients such as rat poison, Klonopin or meth.  Some samples also tested positive for ammonia nitrate, a highly flammable chemical often found in fertilizer.

When ingested, Gravel gives users an extreme high almost to a catatonic state along with paranoia due to elevated levels of the ingredient of PVP.  Gravel can also cause very high blood pressure as a side affect.

As a result users can become addicted to the drug in a manner of months rather than years with other drugs.

Medical experts have yet to conclude the long term effects it will bring to an individual, because of the chemical makeup.

2)  “Krokodil” (Desomorphine) – Flesh-Eating Drug
Krokodil is a homemade drug believed to have originated in Russia that causes severe damage to the flesh disfiguring and is potentially lethal.  Made from pain killers, codeine, cut with things like petrol (gasoline), sulphur, hydrochloric acid, iodine, red phosphorous, matchstick heads, oil, paint-thinner, or alcohol.

Users filter and boil the drug before injecting it.  Users believe the process removes the impurities – they are wrong.

Once injected, the drug causes damage to blood vessels and tissues causing flesh to rot from the inside out.  Essentially Krokodil is a corrosive acid with opiate effects and kills body tissue the way battery acid eats through plastic.

The attraction of this drug is cost.  It is reportedly 20 times cheaper than heroin, but produces a similar high 10 time as strong as codeine.  Prolongs use of the drug is terminal.

3)  “Jenkem”
Jenkem, although not new and having been around for a long time is now reappearing.  Jenkem is a recreational inhalant (gas) and made of fermenting raw human sewage to create a gas which is inhaled (Huffing) to achieve a high.  The drug is homemade and when inhaled takes 10 seconds to take affect and to achieve the most severe hallucinations 20 minutes.

The user may pass out after inhaling the gas then regain a “magical/ hallucinogenic state” within seconds of regaining consciousness.  The high has been described as a feeling of “being out of it” and talking to dead people.  The feeling of ‘being out of it” may last for several hours.

Users risk bacterial, fungal, and even viral infections.  “Sniffing sewage” can cause elicit specific hallucinogenic responses, euphoria, dissociation, strong hallucinations.

Slang terms:  Winnie, Runners, Fruit from Crack Pipe, Leroy Jenkems, Might, Butthash, and Waste.
